Hard-Working Man Upset To See Expensive Food At Grocery Store Paid For With Food Stamps

A man named Patrick Gibson claims to be much like a lot of other regular people in America. He works hard every day to provide for his family. He says that he doesn’t like to take “handouts”, and as a result, he has to work long hours just to make ends meet.

Gibson posted on social media about a recent experience he had grocery shopping in his home town. He says he was shopping at his local grocery store when got into the checkout line behind a cart loaded with mainly more expensive items, and he couldn’t help but envy the purchaser.

Then Gibson saw that the person was paying for a large amount of expensive groceries with their food stamp card, and says he felt cheated. He thought to himself “Why was this person getting benefits when I’m not?” and “Why should I have to work when this person got free food from the government every month?”

Gibson explained he didn’t think it was fair, and especially not in this case when the person was buying “such items like steak and some other very nice choices of food.” He also pointed out that he was buying basics like fruit and diapers for his kids.

The upset family man describes what he saw:

“Sorry but I had to vent. The picture you see on the left is the amount of groceries including diapers that I was able to afford this pay period for my family (wife, son, daughter, myself), which was paid in cash since I actually work hard for a living. The picture on the right is of the purchase in front of me in line. If you can’t tell in the picture there are two full buggies of groceries including such items like steak and some other very nice choices of food. Here’s the kicker. This purchase was made in food stamps, which I wouldn’t have a problem with if I didn’t see the person move their big fold of cash out of the way to get to the EBT [food stamps] card and then load them into the back of a brand new Hyundai Genesis.”

Gibson continues his post: “I just thought I would take the time to tell this person/family that you are all very welcome from all of us hard working/struggling to buy food Americans that have to foot the bill for your fancy steak feast while I skip breakfast and lunch every day that way my wife and children have food to eat every day, because $50-75 dollars doesn’t go very far. So you enjoy your $800 free grocery purchase.”

Not surprisingly, Gibson seems angry that this food stamp recipient is getting more money from the government than he is, and he is also on a tight budget. It should be noted, however, that food stamp benefits are very rarely more than $400 or $500 a month, even for large families, so an $800 purchase with food stamps almost certainly represents two months or more of food stamps.

Gibson's purchase

For example, a family of seven with a net monthly income of $2400 receives a SNAP (food stamps) monthly allotment of just $302. If the family of seven had zero income, they are eligible for a maximum monthly benefit of $1022.

However, extremely few families actually have no income, as one or more family members typically work at least part-time or receive income via disability, welfare or Social Security payments.
