Hairdresser Terrified After Finding This In Teen's Hair

Public health experts warn that “super lice” have been reported in at least 25 states. Super lice are lice that have developed an immunity to the traditional methods of lice treatment.

Keep in mind that super lice cannot be killed with over-the-counter chemicals. A chemical treatment that worked 100% of the time in 2013 now only works 25% of the time due to chemical resistance.

Lice are contagious and can be transmitted to children or adults. The Everyday Health website notes: “Head lice can pass from person to person when people share personal items such as combs, towels, clothing, hats, and hairbrushes. Lice are not spread by dogs, cats, or other pets. Because lice cannot jump or fly, they crawl from one person to another, using their claws to grab onto hair.”

Picking and combing out the lice and nits is time-consuming, and it is very difficult to get every last nit and egg. Many families today are being forced to resort to lice clinics or a new prescription medication called Airallé, which costs $170 but is often covered by health insurance.

Prevention, however, is always the best defense. Make sure to talk to your children about the risks of sharing combs, pillows, and hats. It’s also important to know about the various warning signs of lice, like constant itching and an irritated scalp.

One of the best ways to find lice is to create a vertical part in the nape area of the neck and closely inspect the area using a fine-toothed comb.
