Gym In Kansas Comes Under Fire Over What They Banned

One gym is causing a bit of a stir with a newly instituted policy. If you were hoping to catch up on the news while getting in your workout, that might not be an option. At least, not if you live in Kansas and go to one particular gym. The gym instituted a new policy in hopes that it would cut down on political arguments, which have become increasingly heated in recent times.

Element Fitness gym in Lenexa, Kansas offers television monitors to their guests so they can have something to do during repetitive workouts. But there's one thing missing from the monitors: they reprogrammed them to drop cable news networks like Fox and CNN.

According to an employee at the gym, the move was part of an effort to cut down on arguments. As politics have become more and more heated, there has been more and more drama, with gym members arguing with each other.

It seemed that liberals would fume if someone put on conservative news outlets, and conservatives would seethe when liberal news outlets blared. There was just no happy medium, so the gym cut them out completely.

Not all members of the gym are happy about the new policy. They don't like being treated like children in their health club.

Judith Zillner has been a member of the gym for a long time, and she told Fox 4 that she didn't agree with the decision. "That's not what my dad fought for at all."

Leslie Gutierrez, another gym member, agrees. "I don't like to be obstructed in my own great environment, that I'm paying for," she said. "If there's four televisions sets, surely one of them will have something you like. And you shouldn't get to say the other three can't have what the other people like."

Zillner said she heard about one member of the gym getting so frustrated with the new policy that they got up and 'pulled the plugs' on all the televisions.

The Kansas gym is not the first to adopt a 'no news' or 'no politics' policy. It seems to be something of a trend. More and more employers are reminding people in the workplace that political discussions aren't appropriate. Even family and friends are trying to keep from fighting by agreeing to avoid political conversations.

A Pennsylvania YMCA banned political news stations from their gym because they said 'boisterous conversations' disrupted the peace over the last six months. After a fight almost broke out between two members, staff decided to stop fueling the fires with divisive news coverage.

In April, the popular blogging platform 'LiveJournal' started banning a lot of issues regarding politics. The company was bought by Russians and operates out of Russia, and Russian Internet Laws don't allow free speech when it comes to certain topics, such as possibly criticizing Russia. Another topic they banned is anything related to LGBTQ.
