Gym Bans Police Officers And Military Members For One Reason And One Reason Only

It’s no secret that American law enforcement officers have a tough and, at times, dangerous job. Faced with rising crime and insufficient funding, cops are stretched thin. To make matters worse, many police officers regularly face discrimination and abuse from the very people they are trying to protect. One such incident recently occurred in Atlanta when Jim Chambers, the owner of EAV Barbell Club, put a controversial ‘anti-cop’ sign on the front door of his business.

“Rules: - Do whatever the f**k you want, correctly, except Crossfit cultism – No f*****g cops,” reads the repulsive sign. Now, Chambers’ hateful message has gone viral and the gym owner is being slammed across the country, especially by people who are involved with law enforcement.

The story first came to the media’s attention when a military veteran stumbled across the sign in East Atlanta Village. As a long-time viewer of 11Alive News, a subsidiary of NBC, the veteran knew exactly where to send a photo of the obscene sign.

However, despite the backlash, the gym’s owner is not showing any remorse for his actions and he refuses to change his policy, telling 11Alive News: "It was really just that the vulgarity in that sign, and that seems to bring it out for people, I didn't want the other folks there to take the heat that I'm willing to take."

Although the sign is no longer on the door of his gym, Chambers has confirmed that the policy is still active. "We've had an explicitly stated 'No Cop' policy since we opened, and we also don't open membership to active members of the military,” said the self-declared cop hater. Chambers allegedly intends to change the wording of his sign, removing the foul language, and put it back up when the attention has died down.

Chambers’ gym also serves as a meeting place for a loose collection of local political activists. According to Chambers, the group’s members, many of whom are part of a minority and have low-level criminal records, gather at the gym to avoid the scrutiny of law enforcement officers.

As reprehensible as the gym sign is, law enforcement organizations have refused to comment on the offensive and discriminatory message. "Were we to respond to an emergency there, this sign would not stop us from lawfully doing our job," emphasized a spokesperson for the Atlanta Police Department.

Chambers has not denied that the police can legally enter the gym’s premises if they are granted a warrant for suspicious activity, telling reporters: "If they have a warrant, they can go anywhere they want, but we're not breaking the law." However, as police officers are not legally regarded as a ‘protected class’, it will be up to the courts to determine if Chambers has the legal right to refuse entry to people based on their employment as a law enforcement official.

Unsurprisingly, online commenters are in an uproar over the sign. “We can only hope that when they need the cops, the police don't break any speed records to help this human garbage,” wrote a disgruntled Fox News commenter.
