Great Grandmother Gets Kidnapped By An Unlikely Suspect

On Nov. 2, Dylan Martin, 16, kidnapped his great-grandmother Hazel Abel, 86, from her home with two of his friends. Around 8 p.m., she heard a knock on the door. When she answered it, they threw dirt in her face and covered her with her own apron before forcing her into the trunk of her car. They then proceeded to take it for a joy ride for the next five hours.

The victim's own great-grandson, Dylan Martin, 16, along with his friend Billy Underwood, 15, appeared in court on suspicion of first and second-degree kidnapping, robbery, joy riding and reckless endangering.

Their crimes are so serious, they may be tried as adults. In addition, an affidavit revealed they had also considered releasing her three miles into a canyon or knocking her unconscious before she was able to free herself and escape. Martin and Underwood said they had even considered killing Mrs. Abel and setting fire to the car with her body still inside.

A 14-year-old girl is in custody in connection with the case. She told police she wanted to run away to Portland so Martin suggested they steal his great-grandmother's car. It wasn't until they stopped at a Walmart store in Wood Village, near Portland and 200 miles away, that Mrs. Abel was able to pull a cord to pop the trunk and run inside to seek help.

The teens noticed her and fled, but surveillance video led to their capture at a garage across the street. Mrs. Abel was unharmed, she was also given food and water. Her neighbors said they were worried when they noticed her garage door open and her car missing.
