Grandpa Leaves Fortune To Someone Deserving - And It's Not Anyone In His Family

Danny Sharp, 45, of Welling, Kent, was just doing a good deed. The builder came across 73-year-old Ronald Butcher, who needed a hand with a leaky gutter. Sharp took care of it for the man at no charge, and the pair struck up a friendship.

Then Butcher passed away, and he left Sharp £500,000 in his will. As Metro shares, Butcher’s family disputed the validity of the claim, but the High Court has ruled that his wishes should be honored.

Butcher’s family was up in arms about the claim and put up a fuss, and Sharp had no idea he was going to be left such a sum.

“Mr Sharp said his friendship with Mr Butcher flowered after he helped him out for free with a leaking gutter six years before his death. The builder, a boxing coach whose son, Archie Sharp, boxes for England, also said he and the pensioner had a mutual interest in the sport,” the Telegraph reports.

Members of Mr Butcher's family attacked the validity of the will, insisting that Mr Sharp's story was "ludicrous and absurd." The pensioner "hated sport", they claimed, also insisting that the builder "knew more about the will than he is letting on.”

Mr Sharp’s lawyer explained the matter succinctly.

“He found a male friend in Mr Sharp, somebody he could chat to. They had a shared interest in DIY and he liked to hear about Mr Sharp’s son,” the lawyer said.

The family wasn’t buying it, and they claim that Butcher wasn’t of sound mind when he made out his will. Judge Lesley Anderson QC saw things differently.

"I find that Danny was kind to Mr Butcher, calling on him and doing odd jobs for him without charging. Mr Butcher was kind to Danny, indulged his passion for talking and their real shared interest was their mutual chat, banter and human interest stories, such as Archie's success,” the judge said. "Danny described Mr Butcher as being a bit lonely and it seems to me that this description pretty much hits the mark."

Curiously, Butcher’s body was undiscovered for two months.

“By the time he died, Mr Butcher's sole surviving blood relative was his elderly cousin, Joyce Gilkerson, from Plymouth. His only other "family" were swimming teacher, Evelyn Hutchins, 53, of Southgate, east London, and Peter Rogers, 57, the daughter and son of a close school friend,” the Telegraph reports.

“They regarded Mr Butcher, a lifelong bachelor, as their "uncle Ron" and kept in regular contact with him. The three of them would have inherited everything under a 2011 will, but that was superseded by the document Mr Butcher signed shortly before his death.”

If they kept in regular contact with him, exactly how does his body remain undiscovered and decomposing for two months? It sounds like Sharp was just going out of his way to be kind to a lonely old man, who was obviously quite grateful for the company. While his family may be ticked off at the moment, it was his money to do with as he wished.
