Grandma Gets Paper Cut, Ends Up Losing Limbs

A 54-year-old woman suffered from a horrific ordeal that all stemmed from a simple paper cut. After contracting a deadly infection, she ended up losing all four limbs. She's actually lucky that she survived the ordeal, though, according to doctors.

Her medical team had told her family to prepare for the worst.

Marguerite Henderson of Scotland was busy going about her normal business when she noticed she had a small cut on her finger. Like most people, the grandmother just ignored it and went on with her life. She had no idea how this tiny could would cause her life to take a major turn.

"She noticed on the Sunday that she had a tiny cut on her index finger on her right hand," said her daughter, Kim Donnachie, to the NZ Herald.

"It was that minuscule, she doesn't even remember how she got it. It was just a cut the size of a paper cut... By the next day it looked infected so she went to the pharmacist to see if they had anything for it and they told her to get it checked by the doctor so she got an appointment for the next day."

Unfortunately, by the next day, Henderson felt so sick she didn't make it to her doctor's appointment. Making matters worse, a cold front known as the 'Beast from the East' had moved into the U.K., making it difficult for her to travel.

"By lunchtime she was so unwell, she couldn't walk, her lips were blue and she was turning grey so we rushed her into hospital," said Donnachie.

Ms. Henderson's condition rapidly declined. her two daughters were warned that she might not come through and that they should consider making final arrangements. The nurses were told the patient would die. Things looked bleak.

The grandmother had contracted sepsis, otherwise known as 'blood poisoning', from the infection. Sepsis is when the body's own immune system releases chemicals into the bloodstream to fight an infection.

The chemicals can become toxic and trigger inflammations throughout all the organs. Sepsis can be a life-threatening complication to even a minor infection.

The symptoms may look flu-like at first: fatigue, fever, heavy breathing and mental confusion. It can spiral out of control within hours, however, and threaten multiple organs to fail. The sooner a patient gets treatment with antibiotics the better the patient's chance of survival will be.

Doctors induced a coma, which was only supposed to be for a couple of days as they treated her. She ended up remaining in the coma for a week. Much to the dismay of her family, they watched her limbs blacken and die.

"On Monday the 19th we were sat down and told it's definite she would be having to get all her limbs amputated," said Donnachie.

Thankfully, Henderson is recovering. Even with the quadruple amputation, she feels she's lucky. "She used to drive and would always be on the go. She was so devastated about it all but now she is saying she knows she's lucky to be alive," her daughter explains.

The family is now trying to raise money to help provide the Lochgelly, Fife resident with a bionic hand, electric wheelchair and prosthetic limbs. UK health services can provide basic prosthetics, but better quality limbs and equipment would greatly increase Henderson's quality of life.

"She wants to make the most of her life and enjoy being a grandmother," her daughter says.

The limbs would cost more than $110,000, which the family is trying to raise with online fundraisers.
