Grandmother Murders 9-Month-Old Grandson With Methamphetamines

Hayden and Taylor Shaw had their lives shattered when they discovered their 9-month-old son, Kobe, dead in their home in Sandy Springs, Georgia.

When Tonya Monroe, Mrs. Shaw’s mother, woke them in the middle of the night with news of their baby boy’s death, it did not come as a surprise to the grieving couple, who assumed that their son had finally succumbed to a debilitating genetic disease that he had been diagnosed with from birth. However, the story behind Kobe’s death was far more horrifying.

After paramedics were called to Ms. Monroe’s residence, where the Shaw family were living at the time, Kobe was tragically pronounced dead before being taken to the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy. When the toxicology report came back, the coroner discovered the shocking truth behind Kobe’s death; the report indicated traces of methamphetamine in Kobe’s bloodstream.

In light of this report, Kobe’s death was now treated as a murder. “Toxicology results came back positive for methamphetamine,” Captain Mike Lindstrom of Sandy Spring Police stated. “Something that should not have been in a 9-month-old child.”

Ms. Monroe had a known history of methamphetamine use, however, Mr. and Mrs. Shaw were adamant that she was clean at the time of Kobe’s death, hoping to give Kobe precious time with his grandmother. Detectives were certain that Kobe, who could not crawl or do anything on his own, could not have accidentally found any meth that Ms. Monroe may have left out.

Ms. Monroe quickly became the prime suspect in Kobe’s murder case when the homicidal grandmother fled in a silver, 2004 Toyota 4-Runner with a Georgia license tag. Ms. Monroe was on the run for around two weeks before police were finally able to catch up with her.

When Officers of the Sandy Springs Police Department caught her, they arrested and charged her with possession of methamphetamine, felony murder and cruelty towards children. Ms. Monroe is held in Pauling County.

“I hope you rot in jail,” Ms. Shaw stated in regards to her mother. “I hope she spends the rest of her life in there, to be honest with you. I could still have my son. We could have spent Mother’s Day with him, Father’s Day. And his birthday. His [first] birthday…”

The motive behind Ms. Monroe’s actions remain unclear and it has not been confirmed if Ms. Monroe has an attorney.

Kobe’s father, Mr. Shaw, took to the Facebook to express his pain and heartbreak over his son’s murder:

“Everything is really starting to set in... This pain and depression is so dark that I can’t understand how somebody pulls thru this kinda situation. I'll probably never know why or what you thought you might accomplish by doing this to our son...”

“I’m glad they finally caught you because now your gonna think every day about how badly you have hurt us,” said the heartbroken father.

“Idk how you could do that to such a sweet innocent baby...not even just that but your grandson...justice is and will be served for my son. I love you kobe!... I need you to get me through all this baby boy daddy misses you so bad its unbearable... R.I.P KOBE CONLEY SHAW!!!”
