Government Officials Arrest Man Doing The Unthinkable For ISIS

A North Carolina man was arrested this summer for trying to recruit people to join ISIS, and had been in touch with one of two men killed by a police officer in Garland, Texas, when they attacked an event where the Muslim Prophet Muhammad was being shown in cartoons.

Erick Jamal Hendricks was taken in to custody in Charlotte, North Carolina, for providing material support to a terrorist group. A federal magistrate remanded Hendricks into detention and assigned a public defender.

An FBI statement details online communication between Hendricks and an undercover FBI agent claiming to be an ISIS recruit who saw the attack at the suburban Dallas civic center in 2015.

In that case, ISIS claimed responsibility and referred to the two Phoenix men who were killed, Elton Simpson and Nadir Hamid Soofi, as "brothers."

Of note, just before the 2015 attack, Simpson posted on his Twitter account: "May Allah accept us as mujahideen (holy warriors). "

The FBI also announced Simpson and Hendricks had been communicating before the attack.

Hendricks also emailed the undercover FBI agent in Garland, inquiring regarding security and how many people were there. Hendricks apparently said that if the man saw the organizer of the event that he should "make his voice heard against her," investigators noted.

Hendricks had also been in communication with Amir Said Abdul Rahman Al-Ghazi, who was arrested in June 2015 in Cleveland attempting to purchase an AK-47 rifle from an undercover FBI agent. Prosecutors say Al-Ghazi pledged his allegiance to ISIS and had said he wanted to undertake attacks in the U.S.

Al-Ghazi pled guilty to providing material support to a terrorist organization in early 2016, and has apparently been cooperating with authorities to date.
