Good Samaritans Protect State Trooper

Outside of a Walmart in Princeton, West Virginia, Senior Trooper Tupper of the West Virginia State Police was attacked by a drunk assailant. Good Samaritans helped him recover. Michael Lowery had been asking customers for money when Lowery started questioning him. Lowery had been drinking, and he started hitting Tupper in the face and head with Tupper's own baton.

That's when good Samaritan Jason Robbins stepped in and said “I noticed he still had the baton in his hand and I asked him to let it go and he told me no and he went to pick it up again. I kind of stepped on his hand real hard and kicked the baton away.” His brother and fellow good Samaritan, Tabitha Smith, helped Tupper and described what happened by saying “I told Josh which is my boyfriend to take off his shirt because I knew the officer was bleeding bad. I said to apply direct pressure so he applied it to the officer. He was going in and out of consciousness so I tried to keep him calm kept speaking to him and told him it’s going to be alright.”

Sergeant A.P. Christian told reporters “We appreciate all the help we can get. We’re only as good as the community that we serve. Yesterday showed that the people really care and when we need their backs they’re there for us and then we’re there for them also.” Tupper received stitches and is expected to make a full recovery. On the other hand, Lowery is being held at the Southern Regional Jail with a $50,000 bond facing charges of felony malicious assault, disorderly conduct, as well as obstructing and battery on a police officer.
