Good Samaritan Gets Tossed Off Bridge By Angry Boyfriend After Asking If Woman Is OK

Oftentimes, the best course of action is to mind your own business when a lovers quarrel is going on. Even the tightest of couples will have their tiffs from time to time, and the interjecting of outside voices can do little more than fan the flames even further.

If the bond of the couple is strong enough, they’ll sort through things and move on with their lives. However, what should you do when a quarrel gets to the point that it looks like something is seriously not right?

Should you step in and intervene while encouraging cooler heads to prevail? That could be a good idea if a situation looks like it’s going to get out of hand, but the couple in question may not always see it that way.

You run the risk of being told off - or even worse. In this case, it was a whole lot worse. A Good Samaritan in the state of Connecticut is well aware of that fact right about now.

It seems that he was thrown off of a bridge because he committed the mortal sin of asking a woman that was arguing with her boyfriend if she was ok.

As the Huffington Post shares, the boyfriend didn’t take too kindly to that intrusion into the couple’s personal business. Words were exchanged, and the situation got completely out of hand in a hurry.

The bizarre scene played out shortly after 1 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Unsurprisingly, alcohol was involved in the animated discussions that took place in the wee hours of the morning.

Gregory Rottjer, 25, was arguing with his girlfriend, 22-year-old Jennifer Hannum, as they walked along a small bridge that connects the towns of Shelton and Derby. A pair of good Samaritans walked by the couple, and an unidentified 30-year-old man asked Hannum if she was alright.

Rottjer took umbrage with the question, and he began arguing with the man for sticking his nose in.

The good samaritans tried to walk away from that point, but Rottjer and his friend that was also on the scene, 27-year-old Matthew Dorso, are alleged to have started fighting with them. It sounds like Rottjer got the upper hand in the skirmish, as he would pick up the victim and toss him over the bridge. The victim would plunge 45 feet into the Housatonic River.

The authorities were called from that point, and it took a rescue team to fish the samaritan out of the river. Rottjer and company took off before the cops got there, but they were tracked down before too long.

Rottjer is facing charges of attempted murder, first-degree assault, and reckless endangerment, and he’s being held on $250,000 bail. Dorso was charged with third-degree assault, but he was released with a promise to appear in court to answer for himself.

As for the damsel in distress, she was charged with interfering with an officer and later released on $1,000 bail.

The Samaritan is said to still be recovering from his injuries. There’s a whole lot of takeaways from this gem of a story, but one stands head and shoulders above the rest: few good things happen on a bridge at 1 am on Thanksgiving Day. As such, you should avoid being on one at that time if at all possible.
