Homeless Family Could Lose Everything If They Accept GoFundMe Donations

A struggling mother caring for two disabled children was delighted when a GoFundMe page raised $15,000 to help her family. Unfortunately, the donations quickly turned into a catch-22.

Demicka Gilmour has had a rough couple of years. She has one disabled son. Her teen daughter was diagnosed with bone cancer, and lost one of her legs.

Gilmour lost her job after taking time off to care for her daughter. The family ended up losing their home.

Gilmour lives with her two children now in a Section 9 apartment in Washington. The family doesn't even have furniture-- they sleep on blankets on the floor.

The small family depends on public assistance and food stamps for survival during these dark times.

Imagine the family's delight when strangers donated more than $15,000 on a GoFundMe page to them. Gilmour started the page in hopes that some donations might help, but the generosity of strangers surpassed her wildest dreams.

The struggling mother immediately thought about what she could do with the money. She hoped she could give her family a nice Christmas, after all, the hard times they've endured, and she hoped the money would help spring-board her back into the work force.

Unfortunately, there was a terrible catch. GoFundMe reported the money as income, and Gilmour's family will lose their home and benefits if they accept the money. While $15,000 would be a blessing to help the small family get back on their feet, it certainly wouldn't go far in paying for rent, food and chemotherapy.

“It just doesn’t make sense,” Demicka told KTVB. “There should be an exception for cases like this.”

A local church is trying to help Gilmour by collecting gifts in the form of food, clothing and furniture, which would not affect the family's income or government assistance standing.

So much for the kindness of strangers— it can’t trump the harsh reality of government regulations.

Update: After a great deal of public outrage, a non-proft was able to recoup $9,000 of the $15,000 raised, allowing Tavi to take a dream trip to London to celebrate her 16th birthday, reports King 5. Sadly, she took a turn for the worse after her return, losing her battle with cancer a few months later.
