Girl Suspended After Shaving Head In Support Of Friend That’s Battling Cancer

When you’re in the third grade, there are few things you won’t do for your best friend. Kamryn Renfro believes in that principle, and she made a touching gesture as a nod of a support to her friend that’s battling cancer. As ABC News shares, she and her family would be stunned when her kind act got her banned from school.

Kamryn’s friend, 11-year-old Delaney Clements, is battling a rare form of childhood cancer and lost her hair as a result of chemotherapy treatments. She came up with an awesome way to show her friend that she was there for her.

"Since Delaney is my best friend, I decided to shave my hair because I didn't want her to be the only one. I couldn't go to school because of my shaved head. I wanted to share my story but they didn't let me," she explains.

Kamryn couldn’t go to school because officials at Caprock Academy in Grand Junction, Colorado informed her and her family that she was in violation of the school’s dress code due to her shaved head. As such, she was asked to stay home and was effectively barred from the school.

"Initially, I was furious. We still really respected the dress code. We just didn't agree with it." said Kamryn's mom, Jamie Renfro.

Renfro would head to social media to vent, and the story gained a ton of traction. The red-faced school district was forced to issue an apology in the wake of the ensuing firestorm, noting that Kamryn’s "compassion and selfless acts of courage are to be commended and encouraged."

The statement is right on the money, but it’s unfortunate that it was released as the result of the controversy and not simply because Kamryn did something exceptional to begin with.

"Kamryn did such a selfless thing for my daughter. She really taught a lesson in integrity." said Delaney's mom, Wendy Campbell.
