Friendships are not limited by age. In fact, as one mature young woman from Ottawa, Canada can attest, friendships can indeed cross generations, and new friends can be any age.
It is not unusual for women to become spontaneous friends in a club bathroom on a night on the town, but it is rare for an 18-year-old to become friends with someone three or four times her age.
Mahri Smith, a high school senior, put up a series of selfies of herself with her friends and an elderly woman on Twitter. The cute and touching pics hit an emotional chord with the public, and were retweeted more than 75,000 times in barely 48 hours.
The 18-year-old explained in her tweet: “This lady in the washroom, looking at me,” said: “I remember when my girlfriends and I would get dressed up and go out. I miss that.”
She went on: “So I said: “Why miss it? We're all out right now aren't we?" Short story - we have a new friend.”
Mahri was given kudos by many on social media for her kindness and generosity in befriending the older woman. A number of commenters on social media said that the friendly young woman clearly made the older woman's evening.
In a similar vein, Lenay Newman commented: “This made my whole damn weekend.”
A few commenters got emotional about the pics, and dozens said that the pics left them crying their eyes out.
One poster noted: “OMG MY HEART”
Of course, there were a few party poopers chiming in on the thread, and a half dozen or so who claimed the whole thing was a social media hoax. That said, more than 90% of those who viewed and responded to the post from Smith had a positive point of view.
