Girl Has An Allergic Reaction After Eating Peanuts, Asks For Her EpiPen- School Refuses To Give It To Her

A school district in Arlington Heights, Illinois has apologized after a school nurse recently delayed a student from using an EpiPen after an allergy attack.

Fifteen-year-old freshman Lia Sommer at John Hersey High School knew as soon as she swallowed one bite of a turkey sandwich with pesto from the school cafeteria, that she'd been exposed to peanuts.

So the young woman ran to the school nurse and requested an EpiPen, as spelled out in her health file.

However, the school nurse ignored the instructions in the file and suggested Lia take an antihistamine. Knowing the urgency, Lia refused

"Instead of following Lia's Allergy and Anaphylaxis Plan on file in the health office, which clearly states, 'Give EpiPen First!' the nurse opted to have her call me to confirm before administering epinephrine, with my daughter's life held in the balance," Lia's mother, Lonnie Joy, noted in an interview with local media.

Lia called her mom, and she told the nurse to administer the EpiPen and call 911 right then.

Lia was given the EpiPen and transported to the emergency room.

Of note, the school district has agreed to pay for Lia’s medical bills given the circumstances in this case.
