A disturbing story has emerged from the state of Florida, and it has to do with an incident that took place in a high school bathroom. A teenage girl reportedly had sex with numerous male students, and a gaggle of other students stood there and watched. It appears that the girl engaged in the act of her own volition, but some new details have emerged on her troubled background that sheds a little light on things.
As America Now reports, the girl is a survivor of human trafficking. She ran away from home at the age of 13, and was reportedly held captive and abused for the next two years.
"What’s upsetting about this, is this behavior is not uncommon for human-trafficking victims. She was not equipped to make a stable, rational decision in that situation. She has been in an environment where she has been told to behave a certain way, and there were severe consequences if she didn’t," explains Megan Estrem of Be The Light, which as an advocacy for trafficking victims.
The girl’s mother claims that she went into the bathroom to speak with a boy she had a crush on. The boy asked for sex, and she complied with his request. Other students reportedly had sex with her as well afterwards, and as many as 25 other students stood there and watched. The disturbing scene was filmed and distributed to other students on social media, and the charges began to pour in once the authorities became aware of it.
"The incident this week should not be a reflection on our combined efforts, administration, students, and teachers, to keep our building and students secure and safe," according to South Fort Myers High School Principal Melissa Layner.
While that may be the case, it fails to explain how that many students can assemble in a single bathroom without a single member of the school staff noticing.
