Giant 2014 Yamal Crater Caused By Underground Ice Pingo

Be careful where you walk (or ride your horse) in the Yamal Peninsula in Siberia. Back in the summer of 2014, sleeping farmers in the area heard a loud boom, as loud as 10 thunderclaps all at once. When they went out to investigate, they were amazed to find a giant crater in the ground hundreds of feet across.

The farmers reported the new crater to the local authorities, and eventually some geologists came out to take a look. These Russian academic experts determined that the new giant crater in the Yamal Peninsula was caused by a large ice pingo.

An ice pingo is a core of ice under the top layer of soil. Sometimes these underground pingos collapse or slide away, causing craters to form on the surface. The geologists were excited about this pingo crater, however, as it had not filled up with water like most do, giving the researchers an opportunity to study the geological structure more closely.

Also of note, these pingo craters will turn into lakes after some period of time in most cases, with underground water gradually being forced to the surface by ice settling and / or melting.
