Furious Shopper Compares Carts, Wonders How This Happened

The number of people on food stamps has increased dramatically over the last eight years. During former President Barack Obama's two terms, the number of families receiving food stamps increased by almost 11 million people. While some people might really need those food stamps, it's no surprise or secret that others are just abusing the system.

One customer went shopping, then headed home to vent his frustrations on Facebook. Patrick Gibson, a young, hard-working dad had gone to the store to pick up a few things, and did his best to stretch whatever he had left of his paycheck after bills and rent were paid. He counted carefully to ensure he could afford diapers and fruit.

Gibson was on line behind a woman who had a huge load of groceries. He watched her food being placed on the conveyor belt, wishing he could afford some of the things he saw. He says the groceries she bought included 'steak and some other very nice choices of food'.

The bill came out to over $800. The man watched the shopper pull out a wallet and push aside a wad of cash. The customer then pulled out an EBT benefits card and paid for the two wagons full of expensive groceries with it.

Gibson was shocked. He was even more shocked when he passed the shopper outside in the parking lot, loading the groceries into a brand-new Hyundai Genesis, which is worth about $15,000 more than the car Gibson drives.

How in the world did the country come to this, when hard-working people are counting pennies at the grocery store and making due with beat-up old vehicles, but people on public assistance are driving around in new cars stuffed with free groceries and wads of cash in their pockets?

“I just thought I would take the time to tell this person/family that you are very welcome from all of us hard working/struggling to buy food Americans that have to foot the bill for your fancy steak feast,” Gibson said, "while I skip breakfast and lunch every day that way my wife and children have food to eat everyday, because $50-$75 dollars doesn't go very far. So you enjoy your $800 free grocery purchase."

What's the real story behind that family's new car and large food stamp purchase? No one really knows, so it's probably best not to pass judgement too quickly. However, Gibson's post shows that there is some serious evidence calling for a review of the system. Something is just not right.
