Fox News Ditched Its Often-Mocked Slogan - And Very Few People Noticed

The iconic slogan of the Fox News network was recently dropped with little to no public notice. Coined by former CEO, Roger Ailes, the slogan ‘Fair and Balanced’ has remained the motto for Fox News since 1996. The memorable slogan has been regularly criticized by politicians, rival news networks and comedians for its inaccuracy, accusing the network of disproportionally promoting conservative political viewpoints.

An insider has revealed that the slogan, which was changed months ago, will now read ‘Most Watched. Most Trusted.’ in an attempt to highlight the news platform’s network rating dominance. The new tagline will be used in a number of promotional materials but does not appear to dictate a change in the network’s editorial stance and mission.

The recently disposed tagline ‘Fair and Balanced’ has long drawn criticism from employees at rival news networks. Politicians and journalists, many of them liberals, have highlighted that the major personalities at Fox News have frequently used their positions to foster conservative agendas. Conservative viewers have long relied on the slogan to counteract the idea that Fox News has a 'bias problem’. However, over time, the slogan has become a recurring joke for democrats who ironically comment on the skewed Fox News coverage of politics, especially during an election year.

21st Century Fox CEO, James Murdoch, has defended the controversial slogan, repeatedly making a distinction between the network’s prime-time opinion programs and the Fox News programs, claiming “the real difference between the news reporting and news gathering and the opinion shows - the sort of talk shows that occupy primetime… they are provocative, the opinion shows. But they are opinion shows, and they’re labeled that way.” Mr. Murdoch went on to distinguish Fox anchors Bret Baier and Chris Wallace, maintaining that these particular news anchors maintained the network’s ‘Fair and Balanced’ motto, declaring that both employees were renowned for having little to no bias in their reports.

Amid numerous sexual harassment allegations, Mr. Ailes’ departure has seen a complete reshuffling of the network’s prime-time lineup, with a number of ‘top hosts’ and staffers being asked to leave the company. Bill O’Reilly, a prominent Fox employee and host of the top-rated ‘O’Reilly Factor’, was ousted after repeated accusations of sexual harassment.

Despite the media attention, Fox News still hasn’t used their new and improved slogan in any external marketing or on-air programming. Since August of 2016, a spokesperson for the network has confirmed that the “shift has nothing to do with programming or editorial decisions,” but was changed due to its close association with the network’s disgraced former CEO and is also indicative of the internal rebuilding of the network.

Fox News has continued its streak as the top-rated cable news station across America, outcompeting networks such as MSNBC and CNN with soaring viewership rates. However, the loss of popular anchors Megyn Kelly and Bill O’Reilly is predicted to take its toll on the ratings of the dominant network.
