Fourth Grader Succumbs to Mysterious Bite

Keith Pierce was a 10-year-old star football player at his Montana school. Sadly, he passed away only two weeks after being bit by a brown recluse spider.

On September 30, his parents took him to the hospital when his leg began to swell. Initially, doctors thought it might be cancer, but he was sent home after. Yet, the pain and symptoms continued. As a result, Pierce's parents had to rush him back to the hospital.

Then, early Sunday morning, doctors performed emergency surgery on the 10-year-old, but tragically he never woke up. Early Monday morning, Pierce's parents had to make the unbearably difficult decision to end efforts at resuscitation.

A coroner has since determined that a bacterial infection caused by a brown recluse spider bite was the cause of the fourth grader's death. Since his passing, a GoFundMe page has been set up and a Facebook page to allow people to send their condolences.

Wayne Hawkins wrote on the Facebook page “I so enjoyed coaching Keith. He was an amazing young man who was a true joy to be around.”
