Former NBA Star Gets Closure On Heartbreaking Story Of His Missing Mother

For former NBA star Randy Foye, Mother’s Day is typically a time of sadness, but this year was a little different. That’s because he has finally gotten some closure on something that has riddled his brain for nearly three decades. As the New York Post shares, Foye had not seen his mother since 1989, but he finally learned why just last year.

Foye recently sat down with ESPN to share his emotional story. He was essentially raised by his grandmother, and questions about where his mom was would lead to excuses from family members like that she was ‘on vacation.’

“I am thinking to myself now, like how could she? Why would she go on vacation and not take your kids?” he recalls.

Exactly what happened to his mom has always racked his brain. Dr. Jason Graham, of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for the City of New York, heard about the story, and he decided to look into it. He would make a shocking discovery.

“He couldn’t go into details, [But it was an] overdose. She was found in an apartment building where they pick up and buy drugs. It was known for distribution of drugs. January of 1990,” Foye said.

While it wasn’t exactly the answer he was looking for, he at least had some closure that would let him finally put the issue to rest. He’s decided to look at it not as a story of a mother that took off on her kids, but rather about a mom that was troubled and couldn’t care for them.

“This is definitely a happy ending. Yeah, you didn’t get the Disney and the ‘I just won a Super Bowl’ ending. But all that time of just debating and questioning yourself and questioning your mom’s morals, thinking that she left and didn’t come back … now you know that she was there all along but she ran into a little problem that cost her her life,” Foye added. “But at the end of the day, she was there. The whole time.”

His wife concurs, and his mother’s ashes are now in an urn at the couple’s home.

“It’s like a movie that has finally come full circle. To grow up and never having your mother … the circumstances are just unbelievable,” added Foye’s wife, Christina.
