O.J. Gets Parole- Now Former Juror On Trial Is Speaking Out

When O.J. Simpson was acquitted of murder after the 1995 grueling 'trial of the century', many believed that the jury, who were mostly people of color, released him because he was black. One juror stood up after the verdict was delivered and held up his hand in a 'black power' salute. That juror, 20 years later, says he believes that he delivered an appropriate verdict at the time, even though he now thinks that O.J. actually committed the murder.

The world was shocked when sports superstar O.J. Simpson was arrested for the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ron Goldman. At the time, racial tensions were very high, and it seemed that opinions on Simpson were divided along racial lines. The majority of African-Americans saw Simpson as another person of color framed and victimized by the corrupt LAPD. The majority of white people saw Simpson as an abusive husband with a violent temper and the arrogance of a celebrity who thought he could get away with anything - even murder.

The Simpson case is just one of the cases being looked at in 'The Jury Speaks,' a new four-part series airing on Oxygen. Nancy Glass, executive producer, says the Simpson case is still one of the most fascinating cases of all time because it remains unsolved. “And it involves money, celebrity, sex, murder,” she said. “I think it will always capture our imagination even if an answer is found.”

Lon Cryer, one former Simpson jury member appearing on the special, recalls the time when he spent 10 months sequestered during the grueling trial. He says that at the time he believed Simpson was probably not guilty, and he had to acquit. “Based off the evidence as presented in the trial... the only conclusion I can come to is not guilty,” he told Dan Harris of ABC's News show 'Nightline' in an interview.

“It wasn't based on whether or not I really thought he did it or didn't do it... The only thing that trial did was raise reasonable doubt in my mind about whether or not he was the perpetrator or not.”

Cryer says he was swayed by the infamous glove that supposedly belonged to the murderer. In the midst of the trial, the prosecutors had Simpson try on the glove for the jury, and everyone was shocked when it was too small. Johnny Cochran, Simpson's lead attorney, then spouted the famous line, "If it doesn't fit, you must acquit."

“It screams out to me that obviously those gloves don't fit him which means that maybe he wasn't the perpetrator of the crimes,” said Cryer.

After the trial, the black power salute, Cryer says, was not about racism. “It was only to say to Mr. Simpson... ‘Hey man, enjoy your life, go back and be a real person again, because really, truthfully this was a blessing to you that we gave you here,’” Cryer explained. “I wanted to try to let him know how I felt about it, really, about him and about the fact that he had been acquitted.”

Now, Cryer says he does believe that Simpson committed the crime. He changed his mind after reading 'If I Did It', a book penned by Simpson about how things would have gone down if he had, hypothetically, killed his wife and her friend.

“I thought that was so bush league,” Cryer said. “It became apparent to me in my mind that he was probably the person that went over there and killed those people.”

But he still insists that, at the time, the defense team did its job: it raised reasonable doubt. The jury believes that acquitting Simpson was the right decision in accordance with the justice system, regardless of whether he was guilty or not.
