Folk Music Legend Joni Mitchell Reveals Her Battle With Morgellons Syndrome

Joni Mitchell, 73, is an eight-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter, and an upcoming biography sheds some interesting light on a rather fascinating life. The book also reveals that Mitchell is suffering from Morgellons syndrome, an incredibly rare disease with no known cure.

As the Daily Mail shares, ‘Reckless Daughter: A Portrait of Joni Mitchell,’ comes out next week, but the surprising news has been leaked in advance.

“I have this weird, incurable disease that seems like it's from outer space,” Mitchell said. “Morgellons is a slow, unpredictable killer - a terrorist disease: it will blow up one of your organs, leaving you in bed for a year. Fibers in a variety of colors protrude out of my skin like mushrooms after a rainstorm: they cannot be forensically identified as animal, vegetable or mineral.”

Morgellons is an incredibly rare condition, and medical opinions vary as to whether it’s a mental or physical illness.

“Morgellons disease is an uncommon, unexplained skin disorder characterized by sores, crawling sensations on and under the skin, and fiber-like filaments emerging from the sores,” the Mail notes.

In addition to her battle with the disease, the biography tracks Mitchell’s rise from unknown songstress that had her share of serious health troubles in her youth. She was actually paralyzed at one point and wound up at a polio colony in Saskatoon, but she would eventually recover and discover her passion for music.

“Joni Mitchell is more than a 1970s icon or pop star. She is our eternal singer-songwriter of sorrows, traveling through our highs and lows, the twentieth century master of the art song tradition,” biographer David Yaffe writes. “'Joni would become an iconic singer-songwriter but she would never become a 'star' – not for lack of talent. Records were too limited a medium to capture all that Joni brought to her live performances.”

“Every bit of trouble I went through, I'm grateful for. Bad fortune changed the course of my destiny. I became a musician,” Mitchell says.

The book also goes through the singer’s romantic history, which included dalliances with singers Graham Nash and James Taylor. She notes that her suitors included Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson, but she dismissed their advances.

“My relationship with Graham is a great, enduring one. We lived together for some time – we were married, you might say,” she recalls. “I had sworn my heart to Graham that I didn't think was possible for myself and he wanted me to marry him.”

She had a child in her younger days that she put for adoption. Mitchell would attempt to reconcile with the woman later, but she found her to be a ‘damaged’ person. It sounds like her daughter wasn’t the only one traumatized by the experience.

“I was probably deeply disturbed emotionally for those 33 years that I had no child to raise,” Mitchell adds.

Sounds like a fascinating read, but it’s unfortunate to hear that the 73-year-old singer is suffering as she is. Hopefully, sharing her story will provide her with a little bit of comfort, or at least take her mind off of her troubles for a while.
