Flashing Lights Appear On White House - Social Media Blows Up With Possible Causes

All was pretty quiet on the social media front over the long holiday weekend, and then this happened. A number of videos and photos that showed some mysterious red lights flashing out of windows on the White House emerged, and all hell promptly broke loose. As the Huffington Post shares, theories quickly developed as to what was going on, which naturally led to an endless slew of posts.

A local Fox affiliate in the nation’s capital was one of the first to report on the strange lights, as a camera they had fixated on the White House picked it up. The network quickly shared some video on social media, and they also pointed out that they didn’t have the slightest idea what it was.

“The lights seemed to be strobing inside the building. We’re working to find out what those were,” the station wrote.

While the station tried to get to the bottom of it, some helpful users on social media started to chime in with some thoughts.

“Those red lights flashing inside the White House seem fine & not like a meeting w/ alien overlords &/or a Manchurian Candidate thing at all,” shared one user.

“Say what you will about the Obama admin, they never lit sepulchral red strobe lights in the White House on the night before Memorial Day,” added another.

The incident happened on Sunday evening of Memorial Day weekend, so most users had an abundance of time on their hands to place on their creative caps to add to the conversation. While many notable theories were offered up, a few stood out as head and shoulders above the rest.

“Everybody relax. The flashing red lights coming from inside the White House are just a simple code being transmitted to Russian overseers,” wrote one user.

“It's an orb that was brought back from Saudi Arabia....Trump's hoping it will rid the place of all Russia related material,” shared another.

The conversation went on for quite some time, and all sorts of theories were offered up about what the heck was going on. Was someone tripping the lights fantastic on White House grounds? Was our nation preparing for an alien invasion? Had Trump’s temper finally boiled over in an unfathomable way? Those questions and many others remain unanswered, as the Fox station put a temporary halt to the fun when it revealed the lights had been turned off.

Fox 35 anchor Tom Johnson offered up the opinion that the lights could have been a mere reflection, and it turns out he was right. The New York Post would report the following day that there was some sort of medical emergency outside of the White House and that the red flashing lights were just a reflection of nearby sirens.

“The red lights had nothing to do with the White House,” a spokesman for the Secret Service told the paper.

That put the flashing red light controversy to bed for the moment, but at least we’ll have the memory of yet another social media conversation that snowballed out of control in a heartbeat.
