First Lady Reminds Students How Far We’ve Come As A Nation

Michelle Obama recently delivered her final commencement speech as First Lady at City College in New York. According to OpposingViews, she took the time to remind students just how far we’ve come as a nation.

The First Lady’s speech touched on numerous topics, ranging from her family’s stint in the White House to her travels as First Lady, but she may have hit the highest note of her speech when she touched on the symbolism of her husband’s presidency as a whole.

“Graduates, it’s the story that I witness every single day when I wake up in a house that was built by slaves, and I watch my daughters, two beautiful black young women head off to school waving goodbye to their father, the president of the United States, the son of a man from Kenya who came here to America for the same reasons as many of you: to get an education and improve his prospects in life,” she said.

She would go on to make a few veiled observations on the policies of presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump.

"They seem to view our diversity as a threat to be contained rather than as a resource to be tapped," said Obama.
