Firefighter Can't Proceed with CPR When He Discovers He's Working On His Father

At a Food Lion in North Carolina, customers surrounded store employee Michael Kiddy who collapsed when his heart gave up on him while he was stocking shelves. As the 60-year-old laid in an aisle, many quickly rushed to give him aid.

One of the first to jump in administer CPR was East Burke High School student James Crossno. He realized the 60-year-old employee didn’t have a pulse and needed air.

Crossno, 18, told WBTV, “The workers were running around and yelling and looked scared. I went to see what was going on and saw one of the workers on the ground. His head was bleeding from where he struck it. I just knew I had to respond somehow.”

When the Fure Department arrived, one of the first responders, Steve, soon took over. He stated that he went straight into work mode, beginning with respirations and not paying attention to who the victim was as Kiddy's face was covered with a CPR guard.

"My chief came up and asked me if I'm alright," Steve said, "and then it dawned on me to check and see who this person is," WBTV reports.

He decided to take a closer look and realized something he hadn't noticed earlier. This wasn't Steve's first time helping a fallen victim, but when he looked under the shield protecting the patient's face, he couldn't proceed.

Kiddy, who had suffered a heart attack, was Steve's father.

He then let a colleague take over what he started. Micheal was rushed to the hospital where he survived the heart attack. He was also released 10 days later with a clean bill of health.

Steve said, “I don’t think he really understands just what a miracle this is." Micheal said, “It’s special because they say I was really, really gone. And here I sit.”
