Farm Cartoonist of 21 Years Canned After Comic Offended Reader (Photos)

A freelance cartoonist claims that a paper he worked with pulled the plug on their agreement after one of his editorial cartoons struck a nerve. According to the Des Moines Register, the cartoon served as a commentary on an issue that hits home for Iowa farmers.

Rick Friday had an agreement in place to serve as the editorial cartoonist for Farm News, a weekly publication from The Fort Dodge Messenger. He pinpoints a specific cartoon as the reason for finding himself in hot water, and he’s taken to Facebook to call attention to the situation.

His cartoon depicted a scene that showed the continuing dismay of Iowa farmers over dwindling profits, all while CEO’s at large agricultural firms earn salaries in the millions of dollars. He claims the plug was pulled on his work after one of the corporations depicted in the cartoon complained and pulled its advertising from the publication.

Friday contends that his cartoon was simply based on the facts, but the publisher is stating that it was simply an editorial decision.

"Hopefully, my children and my grandchildren will see that this last cartoon published … will shine a light on how fragile our rights to free speech and free press really are in the country," Friday said.
