Fans Outraged When They See What Chiefs Player Does During National Anthem

The NFL season began last night and players are already making headlines.

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters got a great deal of attention at the season opener when the Kansas Chiefs faced off against the New England Patriots. During Thursday's game in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as the U.S. National Anthem began to play, Peters didn't even bother to take a knee. He sat in silent protest on the bench while his fellow players stood to salute the flag.

Before the game, Peters shared a patriotic picture on Twitter. The photo showed a pair of cleats. One had 'Liberty' written along the bottom, and the other one read, 'Justice For All'.

"Stand for what you stand in. If you see the potential for good, speak up. Don't be Quiet," Peters wrote in his tweet. During the game, he took his stand and spoke out by sitting down and remaining silent.

Many NFL players have started following the path of Colin Kaepernick, the former San Francisco 49er who got national attention for 'taking a knee' when the anthem is played. Kaepernick became more well known for his protests than for his game skills. He claimed that he was protesting police brutality and social inequality by sitting out the 'Star-Spangled Banner'. His protests even landed him on the cover of Time Magazine, an honor that he probably never would have earned with his athletic talents.

Kaepernick isn’t the first player who ever tried to opt out of standing and putting his hand over his heart for ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ and salute of the flag, but he was the first to create a major stir and get attention for doing so. In March, Kaepernick's protests began to backfire on him. He opted out of his contract with the 49ers, and no other team would sign him.

Peters was a first-round draft pick in 2015, and has been opting out of the anthem ever since. The 24-year-old, unlike Kaepernick, doesn't kneel respectfully; he flat-out ignores it. During one pre-season game, he spent the anthem on a stationary bike. He does not appear to be concerned about what these protests may bring for him in the future, or opportunities that the displays might block for him.

Controversial protests aside, Kansas celebrated victory over the New England Patriots, winning 42-27. Patriot fans had expected Tom Brady to lead his team into an undefeated season, but those hopes were quickly dashed.

A dismayed Brady said after the game, "Just a very poor effort and we'll have to do a lot better. Didn't make a lot of plays tonight."

This was the first game that the Patriots ever lost at Gillette Stadium when they were leading at halftime.

Brady has, in the past, disagreed with the protests against the anthem on the field. When asked in an interview with Esquire Magazine about the protests, he responded, “I always choose to stand and reflect, at a moment like that, on the blessings that I've had,” Brady said. “That's how I choose to express how I feel toward the people that have sacrificed for us. I think we live in a wonderful country. It's certainly not perfect. I don't think any country is perfect. It's our responsibility to do the best we can do to change the things we don't like. I think that's part of social responsibility, and everybody is going to do that in their own way."
