Famous NFL Wide Receiver Teammate Cracks Jokes After He's Diagnosed With ALS

Bernie Kosar has been known to put his foot in his mouth and it seems he is up to his old tricks again. The ex-Browns quarterback cracked an insensitive joke on ESPN Radio in Cleveland earlier this week, saying he thought NFL great Dwight Clark, who just recently announced he has ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease), maybe had early signs of the disease when he was the GM of the Browns from 1999 to 2002.

“We had a bad weekend with Gale Sayers being diagnosed [with dementia], Dwight Clark with ALS,” Kosar, who himself suffers from post-concussion syndrome, commented. “I can make a joke about his struggles in picking players when he was here. It almost makes me wonder if maybe it started earlier.”

Clark, the general manager of the Browns during their expansion years, was at the helm of the franchise for teams that put up a 21-43 record. His tenure in Cleveland will definitely be remembered for taking quarterback Tim Couch as the first overall pick in 1999. Most football experts consider this one of the worst draft picks ever made in NFL history.

After a firestorm of criticism on social media, Kosar followed up about his “joke” on Twitter, noting that he intended no disrespect to 49ers legend Clark.

“I spoke strongly about the need to prevention & care before U Get to This Sad Point!,” Kosar tweeted.

Keep in mind that Kosar has had his own problems since retiring in 1993. He has declared bankruptcy, been arrested for drunk driving and was fired from a broadcasting job for making bizarre, slurred comments on the air.

Ex-49ers tight end Clark is fampus for one of the most iconic plays in NFL history. Known as “The Catch,” Clark’s touchdown reception from QB Joe Montana pushed the 49ers past the Cowboys in the last seconds of the hard-fought 1982 NFC Championship Game.

Clark has said he intends to “live every day to the fullest” as he works to deal with the challenges of ALS.
