Salvador Dali's Body Dug Up After Tarot Reader Claims He's Her Father

The famous surrealist artist from Figueres, Catalonia, Spain, Salvador Dali, passed away in 1989. Though he had been married, as far as the world knew, he had no children. He was a stepfather to his wife's daughter, who she gave birth to in a previous marriage, but no one was aware of any children fathered by the artist himself.

For about 20 years now, one woman has been fighting the courts to prove that Dali was her father. She finally got her chance.

Pilar Abel, who works as a professional psychic and tarot reader in Catalonia, Spain, says that Dali is her biological dad. According to Abel, her grandmother pointed him out once on the street and told her that he was her father.

She says her mother and Dali had a relationship when she was working in a port where the painter was living at the time.

Abel argues that the similarity is obvious - she claims she looks exactly like Dali, minus the famous 'ten to ten' up-twisted mustache for which he was known. She's been trying to have the painter's body exhumed for 20 years so she could get a paternity test done, and a judge has finally granted the 61-year-old woman her request.

Dali, who died in 1989 at the age of 84, was exhumed on Thursday. Authorities removed the one-ton slab that covered his tomb and will be taking DNA samples from his bones and teeth fragments. The fragments will be sent to Madrid for intense DNA testing.

Embalming technology in the 1980s had become advanced enough to preserve Dali's appearance, so much so that people were stunned by his condition. “Salvador Dalí is forever,” said the person who embalmed him. According to reports, even the painter's mustache was perfectly intact.

The Dali Foundation, which oversees the artist's estate, fought the exhumation, calling it 'entirely inappropriate'. They deny that "Pilar Abel Martínez’s claim has any legal basis."

Abel was very pleased with the decision and eagerly awaits the results of the DNA test. "I just want to know the truth. I am very positive, very happy," Abel told reporters.

If he is her father, Abel intends to legally pursue a portion of Dali's estate, which is worth hundreds of millions of dollars. If she is found to be his biological child, under Spanish law, she may be granted up to one fourth of his estate.

Salvador Dali’s sexual tastes have long been the subject of speculation and discussion. His artwork shows he had a fascination with erotica and perversion. When he was a child, his father showed him explicit photos of cases of people with venereal diseases in advanced stages.

As an adult, he and his wife reportedly hosted frequent orgies, and their home was well-stocked with sex toys. Many people believed that he was a ‘closet homosexual’ who preferred to watch people have sex rather than participate. He always was proud to boast that he was impotent.

Dali's biographer, Ian Gibson, says the painter would frequently say, "I'm impotent, you've got to be impotent to be a great painter."

With this paternity test, the world is about to find out if that’s true.
