Family Notices Something Strange At Grandma's Funeral

In a bizarre story out of the Big Apple, we have a funeral of an 81-year-old woman with the wrong body in the casket…and only one child said anything.

Val-Jean McDonald, mother of eight, with over 20 grandchildren died at the age of 81 from cancer.

Her funeral saw at least 100 mourners attending Union Baptist Church in Harlem, including her sons, other relatives and friends, and some who didn’t actually know her but are friends with her children.
Everyone present walked past the open casket to see a body dressed in McDonald’s favorite pink blouse and white suit, and wearing her best jewelry.

“Why did they cut off all her hair?” one son recalls thinking. “Maybe it’s the cancer.”

Children, however, sometimes see what adults cannot or will not. “My 10-year-old son said, ‘Daddy, that’s not Grandma,’” McDonald recalled. “I said, ‘Yes, that’s what happens,’” he told the young man, trying to explain to him that people can look very different after they die.

The next day, the family proceeded with McDonald’s cremation at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Body In The Casket Was Not Their Mother

Almost a week passed before a manager from McCall’s Bronxwood Funeral Home in the Bronx called one of McDonald’s sons, the Rev. Richard McDonald, with hard-to-believe news.

“She says, ‘That body was not your mother,’” Richard McDonald said in an interview with the New York Times. “‘Your mother is still here.’”

The phone call left Ms. McDonald’s family stunned and disbelieving, and asking how could so many people not have recognized that it was the wrong body in the casket. Moreover, how could her sons all believe that this was the body of their beloved mom?

The biggest question of all, of course, is how could a funeral home possibly make this kind of mistake?

The spokesperson for McCall’s, George Arzt, was not willing to discuss details about the incident. “We have spoken to the families affected and acknowledged our deepest sorrows,” he noted.
