Family Appalled By Funeral Home Mix Up

Monique Williams and her brothers had arrived early at Leak and Sons Funeral Home to approve their mother Ella Mae Rutledge's body for visitation before Saturday's service.

They were immediately stunned to find a stranger lying in their 74-year-old mother's casket. Williams said, "Me and my brother say, 'Dang! That don't look nothing like Mom!"

Williams said the person in the casket had long nails, but her mom keeps her nails short. She also stated that the person in the casket had black hair while Mrs. Rutledge had gray hair.

She continued to say "We knew she would look different but we said, 'Man, she can't look that different.'"

They were then shown three other deceased women--none of them was Mrs. Rutledge. The family was devastated when they found out their mother had been laid to rest the day before by another family at Mount Hope Cemetery.

Spencer Leak, the funeral home owner, admitted that an employee had accidentally mixed up the tags with Mrs. Rutledge and the other women. Leak said this was the first time in 83 years that they made this type of mistake.

The family was forced to hold a memorial service instead with over 300 people arriving to pay their respects--many arriving from out of state. Originally from Alabama, Mrs. Rutledge died on October 31 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease.
