Ex-Chicago Cop Sues Department Over 'Racist' Firing, Police Deliver Perfect Response

A Muslim who was once a police officer in Chicago says that he faced a great deal of harassment from his fellow officers due to his religion, only to end up fired. He's filed a federal lawsuit, alleging discrimination.

Ramtin Sabet, an Iranian immigrant, said his co-workers would call him a 'terrorist' and accuse him of being an ISIS leader. They'd also make racist jokes at his expense, such as asking him if he rode a goat to work.

"It was like I was being hazed all the time," Sabet said. "I'm placing handcuffs on somebody, and they keep making fun of (me) all the way from the crime scene to the station as a result of my own officers making harassing comments towards me."

Sabet claims he made multiple complaints with his superiors at the North Chicago Police Department, both formally and informally, but they did nothing. He says his supervisors didn't bother to investigate, nor did they discourage the behavior among the officers.

Sabet also claims he filed two cases with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission regarding 'severe and pervasive' workplace discrimination. He complained that due to discrimination, he was overlooked for training opportunities and promotions. It was these formal complaints, he claims, that resulted in his termination.

The NCPD denies the allegations, saying that the department embraces diversity. He claims Sabet was fired due to his own behavior, not for complaining about discrimination.

"Officer Sabet was terminated for violations of police department rules and regulations," said Police Chief Richard Wilson . "He has challenged that determination. The city plans to vigorously defend its decision."

"We trust our police departments to keep us safe," said Executive Director Ahmed Rehab of the Council on American–Islamic Relations. "We trust that they have moral fortitude that they should practice within their own departments, as well as with the citizens that they serve."
