ER Nurse Tasked With Helping to Save Unidentified Patient, Heartbroken To Discover Who It Was

Jenifer Medina is an ER nurse who made a gut-wrenching discovery this week when she discovered the hit-and-run victim she was trying to save was her brother.

She was working a busy shift at Mission Hospital Regional Medical Center when a man was admitted that was "in bad shape." She was then asked to identify the patient by his wallet--she was heartbroken when she found out that it was her own brother, Cesar.

Cesar Andreas "Andy" Medina was struck by a car while skateboarding through a crosswalk in Laguna Nigel, California, Friday. According to the police, Cesar had the right of way.

When he was taken to the hospital, he was first registered as "John Doe." Before Jenifer searched her brother's identification, she already knew that something felt wrong. She set up a GoFundMe page in her brother's memory and wrote, “When I saw the wallet it looked familiar, and when we [opened] it [we] saw my brother’s face on the ID."

Jenifer also told NBC LA, “I just knew I wanted to say my last goodbyes to Andy after they cleaned him up. And tell him how much I love him.” Unfortunately, doctors were unable to save her brother.

The driver who hit Cesar was arrested by sheriff's deputies on Saturday. Andrew Michaels, 19, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run and is being held on $100,000 bail.
