Enormous Cruise Ship On Collision Course With Jet Skiers, Deputy Dives Into Action

In a dramatic rescue at sea, two female jet skiers were saved by a fast-acting deputy who pulled the women out of the water onto his boat moments before they could have been hit by a 130,000-ton cruise ship.

As he explained later, Deputy Taner Primmer knew he had no choice but to move fast when he was informed that two young women were stuck in the path of an oncoming Carnival Cruise ship in Port Canaveral, Florida, this weekend.

It seems that two students in town for Spring Break, Allison Garrett, 20, and Skylar Pentasuglia, 19, had both been aboard the watercraft when it overturned and they ended up in the water. Things got worse quickly when the wind pushed the women into the narrow channel of the port and into the path of the approaching 13,000-ton ship.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Deputy Primmer got the call and rushed his boat at high speed to rescue the desperate women. He managed to pull both of them out of the water in less than a minute just before the huge ship slipped past them just a few yards away.

The amazing rescue was recorded on video by a passenger aboard the vship, as Port Canaveral Harbor Pilot Captain Doug Brown also steered the cruise ship as much as he could in the narrow channel to avoid hitting the jet skiers.

The Sheriff's Office Facebook page noted: “Were it not for the quick actions of both Deputy Primmer and Port Canaveral Harbor Pilot Capt. Doug Brown, the girls could have been pulled under the ship causing potentially serious if not fatal injuries.”

Sheriff Wayne Ivey commented: “I could not be more proud of the actions of Deputy Tanner Primmer, a member of our SeaPort Security Marine Unit who placed his life in peril without hesitation to rescue the Port visitors.”

After Primmer hauled the women on the boat, he quickly backed the water cruiser away from the larger ship and no one was hurt.
Passengers on the cruise ship commented about the rescue and one remarked that although the ship hadn't hit the girls, it did end up slamming into the overturned jet ski.
