Encounter At Store With WWII Veteran Goes Viral

Fred Mayhew is used to doing things for other people. The 89-year-old veteran is well-known in his town of Hampden, Maine where he regularly makes chocolate fudge for local businesses, fire departments and senior citizens events. But, according to The Blaze, the World War II veteran was recently rewarded by someone doing something nice to him.

He was wearing his veteran’s hat in line at the grocery store when a young woman standing behind him, told him to put his money away.

“I was standing there, and I had two $20s in my hand to pay for my groceries when the girl behind me said, ‘Put that back in your pocket. I’m gonna pay for that,’” Mayhew explained. “She told me, ‘Lots of luck’ and ‘thank you for being a veteran.’”

Mayhew was caught off guard and a little confused at first. “I’ve never seen her before in my life,” he said. “I said, ‘What’s going on here?’”

When he got home, he explained to his wife what had happened. Mayhew, who served in the U.S. Army between 1945 and 1946, said he was pleased to see that there are kind people in this world who do things for others.

“Good things still happen in the world,” he said.
