Election Recount Effort Is Being Funded By This Person

The recount law in Michigan required candidates who lose by .5% or greater to pay $125 per precinct, with the rest of the expensive task to be picked up by the taxpayers. Green Party presidential candidate Jill Stein, who received 1.1% of the vote in Michigan, launched a grassroots campaign to raise funds for the recount. The vast majority of donations were under $100, but Stein has managed to raise the $973,750 to pay her part. The taxpayers would foot the rest of the bill, which is estimated to cost between $2 million and $5 million.

Things have changed, and it could end up costing Stein. New legislation in Michigan passed Tuesday by the House Elections committee requires any candidate losing by more than 5% of the vote must foot the entire bill for a recount. If passed by the state, the bill would take effect retro-actively as of January 1, 2016. This means Stein better ramp up her fundraising.

“I am very outraged at the expense that’s being put on the people of Michigan because of this recount,” said Speaker of the House Kevin Cotter, R-Mt. Pleasant. “The only question I have is that it’s probably a reform going forward. I haven’t done the research, but I would have some questions to get answered as to whether we could have retroactive effect. If we can do it legally, I would like nothing more than to require candidate Stein to pay for the actual cost.”

Not everyone is supportive of the bill, particularly the retro-active clause. “We should not change the rules in the middle of the game and retroactively change the rules after the game is already over,” said state Rep. Jeff Irwin, D-Ann Arbor.

House Bill 6097 has passed by the committee and is now in the hands of the House of Representatives.
