Elderly Woman Celebrates Her Birthday At Basketball Game In Texas

It’s no secret that America is divided along ideological, spiritual and ethnic lines. However, a heart-warming story from San Antonio, Texas, is reminding people that, no matter who you are talking to, a little kindness costs nothing.

When Mary Alice, an 82-year-old woman from San Antonio, was asked what she would be doing to celebrate her 82nd birthday, the elderly lady already had the perfect plan.

As an avid basketball fan, Ms. Alice – who travels in a wheelchair – has been a supporter of the San Antonio Spurs for much of her adult life. Consequently, the only thing that Ms. Alice wanted to do on her birthday was go to a Spurs game and hold up a hand-made sign.

The sign which read: “I love [heart symbol] the Spurs” on the left side and “All I want for my 82nd birthday is a hug from Manu and Patty,” on the right, was written on a black piece of cardboard and featured stylized white writing and a big red heart symbol.

Luckily, when Ms. Alice arrived at the game, an exciting showdown between the Spurs and the Toronto Raptors, she was able to secure a courtside seat. Wearing a pair of khaki pants and a pink birthday sash, Mr. Alice was captured on camera smiling sheepishly and holding up her sign.

Unsurprisingly, the endearing photos went viral, with many online commenters and social media users praising Ms. Alice for her friendly attitude and sense of adventure.

Luckily, the two players that Ms. Alice’s sign refers to, Manu Ginobili and Patty Mills, were both happy to fulfil the elderly woman’s request for a hug. This touching moment was also captured on camera and has been shared thousands of times on social media.

Ms. Alice, who has described herself as the biggest fan in Spurs history, received two big hugs from Manu and Patty before the game. Both players saw Ms. Alice’s sign before the game began and decided to take a few minutes out of their pregame warm-up and help make a fan’s birthday extra special.

This isn’t the first time that the San Antonio Spurs have made headlines in recent weeks. Gregg Popovich, the Spurs coach and a vocal critic of President Trump, drew the ire of GOP supporters when he condemned President Trump’s comments about NFL players who kneel during the national anthem.

Popovich also criticized the president after he cancelled a White House event for the Golden State Warriors.

However, Popovich’s most recent attack on President Trump is his longest and most aggressive yet. The latest condemnation was delivered following reports that Trump disrespected a Gold Star family during a phone call to the widow of a soldier killed in Niger.

Shortly afterwards, Popovich – who is a 4-year Air Force veteran – gave the following statement:

“This man in the Oval Office is a soulless coward who thinks that he can only become large by belittling others. This has of course been a common practice of his, but to do it in this manner – and to lie about how previous Presidents responded to the deaths of soldiers – is as low as it gets."

"We have a pathological liar in the White House: unfit intellectually, emotionally, and psychologically to hold this office and the whole world knows it, especially those around him every day. The people who work with this President should be ashamed because they know it better than anyone just how unfit he is, and yet they choose to do nothing about it. This is their shame most of all.”
