Elderly Vet Forced To Take Down Military Flag By Condo Association

Many veterans are proud of their service, and proud of the U.S. Armed Forces. Many of them display that pride by flying flags in honor of the country and the military. One vet was told that his Navy flag was not permitted under his condo's guidelines, and he's being forced to take it down. Some people feel it's just not right.

Joe Allen, a veteran of the U.S. Navy who fought in Vietnam, wanted to fly his Navy flag from his apartment. Allen and his wife live at Laurels Condominiums in Enfield, and according to the condo's strict code, flags of that type aren't allowed.

The flag code for the condo building allows only seasonal holiday flags and the American flag. All other flags are prohibited.

Allen has lived in the condo since 2003, but he only got the flag last year. "All of a sudden, they do a walk-around and they decided to say you can’t put your Navy flag up anymore. They took the happiness out of living here," said Allen to WFSB-TV.

Allen suffers from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after spending six years serving in a unit that cleared landmines. He's shocked and distressed now that he has this battle with the condo board on his hands.

The board told Allen if he didn't remove his flag, he'd be charged $25 per day in fines. That amount can quickly add up to some hefty bills.

The condo is going to hold a hearing with the board next month to discuss their decision. Allen is waiting and hoping to make his case.

People who live in condos, apartment complexes and housing communities across the country have experienced similar backlash because they're flying patriotic symbols from their units. One mother in Minnesota was flying the American flag outside of her home, but her condo association demanded that she move it.

Angie Hildebrandt is a mother of two members of the military, but the condo board was unsympathetic. They argued that 'hanging garments' of all kinds are prohibited on the grounds. Hildebrandt argues that Old Glory is covered under the Freedom to Display the American Flag Act of 2005, giving every American the right to display a flag outside of their home.

The community took Hildebrandt's side and supported her in her fight with the condo board. Someone ended up vandalizing her flag.

One veteran in Florida got into a bitter battle with his homeowner's association because he had an American Flag painted on his mailbox. They claim the former Navy Officer had violated the HOA rules and demanded that he change it.

While tailgating in the parking lot at a Braves game, a veteran was told he couldn't have an American flag on display. The Braves don't even have a policy that prevents people from flying flags from their car, but the parking attendant was adamant.

"I’m an Army veteran, I fought for the right for Americans to fly their flags, and for someone to tell you can’t fly it at a baseball game, that's not the right place," said the vet to CBS-46 News.
