Elderly Couple Refuses To Open Door - Horrified When They Realize What's Happening

An elderly couple went to bed, as usual, one night and fell asleep. Soon after, they were awakened by some frantic knocking on the front door. Someone began pounding on the door, and the couple was afraid to get out of bed and answer it. They feared that someone was trying to rob them. It turned out their house was on fire, and a neighbor was trying to warn them.

A 30-year-old Melbourne woman, known only as Jasmina, came home on Wednesday night and was shocked by a terrifying sight. She spotted smoke plumes rising from the house of her elderly neighbors. Realizing the house was on fire, she leapt into action.

"My husband saw the smoke and we just started alerting the neighborhood," Jasmina said.

The younger couple rushed to the home of 75-year-old Mele Bijrovic and they knocked on the door. Mr. Bijrovic and his wife were both in bed and had no idea that a lounging room in their home was on fire. When he and his wife heard the knocking, they decided to ignore it.

The Bijrovics refused to get out of bed to answer the door, not knowing that, room by room, their home was filling up with smoke and being engulfed in flames.

"Mum heard banging and she didn't want to open the door," said the couple's son, Kemal Bijrovic.

Jasmina refused to give up, though. She kept trying to get the couple's attention and called triple zero, Australia's version of 911. Mr. Bijrovic finally got up to see what was going on when he saw the flames. At first, he attempted to try putting them out, but then he got his wife and did the smart thing. The two evacuated.

At the last minute, the couple was able to narrowly escape the inferno. Firefighters say they were lucky as they nearly waited until it was too late.

"She's a hero," Mr. Bijrovic said of Jasmina.

The couple had apparently built a makeshift smokehouse in the front room of their home. Bijrovic would manufacture homemade smoked meats in that room, but he's currently out of business.

Firefighters investigating suspect it might have been a freezer that malfunctioned and might have started the fire. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Bijrovic hopes to be back in business soon, and Jasmina hopes to be his first customer when he is.

Some people feel that the elderly couple might be getting a little too far on in years to run a home-made business, or even live alone. "If you don't know your house is burning, and you ignore neighbors pounding on the door because you are afraid to open the door...the time has come for your grown children to either take you in or move you to a retirement home where you can be safe," said one commenter on Yahoo! News.
