Eagles Players Receive Mixed Reviews After Doing This During The National Anthem

During Monday Night Football, some players on the Philadelphia Eagles team joined the protest of the national anthem. While they stood for the salute, instead of putting hands over their hearts, the players raised their fists together in solidarity.

The players who participated in the protest were Steven Means, Malcolm Jenkins, Ron Brooks and Marcus Smith. Prior to the game, Jenkins made mention that the demonstration would be coming.

“For me, it has nothing to do with this country or the flag or the anthem in itself,” Jenkins told Sportsradio 94WIP. “Really, it’s just to continue to push forward the conversation about social injustice, and that’s a range of things from police brutality to wages and job opportunities, education.”

According to Jenkins, the teammates thought about performing the protest at the game earlier this month, but they were worried it would take away from the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

This was not the first protest of its kind; in 1968, black athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raised their fists during the anthem at the Olympic games. The raised fist became a prominent gesture meaning 'black power' during the civil rights movement.
