Don't Touch This Plant Or It's Going To Be A Painful Mistake (Photos)

Wild parsnip weed… sounds like it could be delicious right? WRONG! Those who said they’ve come into contact with it report experiencing itching, burning, blisters, scars and even infections.

KWQC reports that the oil of the wild parsnip weed is what is actually causing the irritation. Heavy rainfall has lead to a thick crop of the plant in places like Iowa, which is why people have reported coming in contact with it.

“The best defense is to know what the plant looks like and avoid it,” Dr. Maria-Teresa Galoso of UnityPoint told KWQC.

However, if that point is moot and you’ve already had contact with the plant’s sap there is one thing you need to remember. Avoid sunlight, which could heighten its impact on the skin.

“Stay out of the heat,” says Dr. Dave Dierks of Genesis Health System told KWQC.

After touching wild parsnip week, one usually develops red, blistered skin after one or two days of exposure. When that occurs, cover the area with a wet, cool cloth and avoid rupturing the blisters. Dierks said to manage your pain and avoid infection,

“Benadryl or steroid cream would be fine,” he said.

He also noted that the area should be kept clean with antiseptic cream until it clears, which could be a few weeks.
