Donald Trump Puts A Stop To One Of President Obama’s Biggest Agreements

According to U.S. officials, the Trans-Pacific Partnership won't be meeting to vote this year. President Barack Obama is backing off in the face of President Elect Donald Trump's upcoming inauguration.

President Obama has decided in his lame duck position that he will not pursue a TPP vote for a free trade deal with Asia. According to a tweet by Jared Bernstein, who was Vice President Joe Biden's economic advisor, "Various credible sources tell me that Obama will NOT try to pass the TPP in lame duck. Not unexpected, but there it is..."

Though some lawmakers have been lobbying for a deal for over a year now, the president has decided to bow to the inevitable and suspend the vote due to Republicans winning the White House, the Senate and the House of Representatives majority in the election.

Donald Trump has been very clear on his opposition to the TPP, going so far as to say it is 'a rape of our country.' Trump argues that the deal would drive companies to send jobs overseas. Blue-collar workers came out in droves to support Trump because of his vow to return American manufacturing jobs to U.S. soil.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan have both said that they would not be taking up the vote at this time and will be leaving it for the Trump administration to pursue.
