Doctors Reveal How This Baby Girl Became Pregnant (Photos)

Parasitic twins, a condition that occurs when one embryo feeds off the other in utero, is a serious threat to the health and well-being of an unborn baby. One baby survived pregnancy and was born, but her health seemed to be failing. Scans revealed that she had a parasitic twin inside her abdomen that was still growing and feeding off of her.

Nisha, a 15-month-old girl in India, was rushed to the hospital because she could not eat or drink. Her belly was extremely bloated. Raju and Sumathi, Nisha's parents, were afraid their daughter had a tumor.

Initially, doctors thought the little girl had a huge cyst. They performed scans on the child and were shocked when they found a 7 lb. 11 oz. fetus in her abdominal cavity.

The condition is known as 'foetus in fetu' and is extremely rare. The fetus in this case was a mass of bone, flesh and hair, with an umbilical cord-like structure leaching off Nisha's blood supply.

Nisha was rushed into surgery and the mass was removed. The surgery was complicated, as the fetus fused with Nisha's left kidney and had attached itself to other organs.

"Other organs like the pancreas, a portion of the spleen and left side of the colon were attached to the foetus and the blood vessels were splayed around the structure," said the doctor. "So we had to remove and detach the blood vessels and move the organs away from the foetus without injuring them."

"She always had a slightly larger than normal stomach but we ignored it until she stared crying endlessly and began having issues breathing and having food," said Sumathi, 28.

Her parents, low wage earners, were unable to afford medical care until the situation became an emergency.

"We had never gone for scans before or during her birth," Sumathi explained. "I am thankful to doctors for removing the fetus and giving her a new life."
