Doctor’s Mistake Almost Cost Boy His Eye

Cuts and scrapes are something that come with the territory when you're caring for a young, active child. When one grandmother brought a child with a gash over his eye to the emergency room, she thought doctors would have no trouble with the simple procedure, but unfortunately the doctor blundered.

Jay Watson, 4, was playing outside with his older brother when he fell and cut his head. His grandmother took him to the hospital and doctors decided to use medical glue to close the wound. The doctor began the procedure but squeezed the tube too hard. A glob of glue dripped down into Jay's eye.

The doctors apologized to the family for the mistake and told them that Jay's eye should open in a few hours. It turned out to be five agonizing days before the glue finally dissolved.

"The stress that child went through to try to and open his eye is unbelievable. He screamed the hospital down, all because of incompetence," said grandmother Jayne Gilder.

The family brought Jay back to the hospital the next day and they tried to open the boy's eye, which turned into nightmare. The failed attempt left Jay, who has Asperger's syndrome, hysterical.

"He was in excruciating pain. The whole thing could have been avoided so easily and that’s what his mum is annoyed about the most," said Gilder.

The reason the family is so outraged is because hospital staff told them this kind of thing has happened before. "Why they didn’t put an eye patch or something to protect his eye, I don’t know," said the grandmother.
