Do You Know Why Barns Are Painted Red? The Reason Is Surprising

Most of us have seen that iconic images of red-painted barns. But have you ever wondered why American barns are painted the classic color?

Scandinavian farmers used to paint their barns to look like brick as a sign of wealth, according to Independent Journal Review. However, that’s not why they do it in America.

In American barns were painted red mainly out of necessity and frugality.

The first reason was because they didn’t have paint. A DIY mixture they concocted from linseed oil, milk, lime and rust (to prevent mold from growing) was the closest thing they had to paint. The mixture ended up being a reddish color. In addition to being visually pleasing, the mixture helps to seal and protect the wood.

The darker color of the red paint was also known to keep the barns warmer in the winter, because it absorbed more heat from the sun. This made it more functional than to just leave the barn unpainted.

When paint was finally more accessible to farmers, they kept the red out of tradition. And also because it was the cheapest. This is because one of the main ingredients in red paint, iron and oxygen are prevalent.
