Do You Know What Language Is Popular In Each State? This Map Shows What’s Most Commonly Used

America is a melting pot of immigrants from nations all over the world. And of course the country’ original inhabitants, Native Americans.

Today, English is the most commonly spoken language in the U.S., Spanish ranks at the second most common language spoken in America. But you probably already knew that. What you probably don’t know is what are the other commonly spoken languages in the U.S. or the state you live in.

Thanks to Ben Blatt of Slate, you can find out. According to Wide Open Country, he created a map that shows the most common languages spoken in every state after English and Spanish. He created the map using data from the Census Bureau’s American Community Survey.

The map shows that German is very popular in the Heartland of America and the West. About 16 states have German as their most common language, while 12 speak French. Vietnamese is more common in Texas and Oklahoma, and is popular in four states. The third most common language in Illinois is Polish. Navajo is spoken in Arizona and New Mexico.

There are a few ones on this map that you would never think of. Tagalog is spoken in California and Oregon, Hmong is spoken in Minnesota.
