Do You Know What The End Of A Measuring Tape Is Used For?

Everyone knows what a tape measure does. It measures things…duh.

But YouTuber Leah Bolden, a building contractor and educator, recently revealed the lesser known secrets of the tape measure on her video series “See Jane Drill,” which people how to make and fix stuff.

According to the video, there is a small slot on the end hook of most tape measures that’s used to grab the head of nail or screw. This helps when you need to hold a tape measure in place, you can just sink a nail or screw in then anchor your tape measure from there.

You may have also noticed that the end of the tape measure hook is serrated, this is used to help you make a mark if you don’t have a marking tool. Have you ever wondered why there are numbers on a tape measure’s plastic or metal case? It’s because the case itself is a measurement and the number indicates it’s length.

A tape measures tape actually starts at 1/16” because the thickness of the hook is 1/16”. If you take an inside measurement by pressing the hook against what you’re measuring, the measurement will be accurate. If you hook into it, the play in its rivets move to compensate by creating a 1/16” gap so you’re still getting a correct measurement.
