Do You Know What This Common Tool Is Used For? Most Don’t Know

On Facebook's 'Throwback Thursday,’ the website 'Do You Remember' posted an image of an odd-looking contraption. If you know what it is, you might be the first - but warning, you're sure to date yourself!

The contraption has a handle and an odd-looking triangular blade with a blade guard. Looking at it stumped a lot of commenters. Most thought it was some kind of gardening tool. Others suggested that it is a kitchen tool, such as an oyster shucker or fancy apple corer.

Warning - spoiler alert. Don't read any farther if you don't want to know what it is. The device was quite handy at one time and found in just about every garage. It's an oil can opener, from back when engine oil was packaged in cans.

The device would puncture a triangle-shaped hole into the can so you could pour out the oil. It's not really that old - it dates back to the 1980s. Shortly after that, however, oil started being sold in plastic packaging with screw-top caps. The oil can opener went the way of the dodo bird.

If you can find one of these handy dandy tools lurking in your grandparent's garage, you might consider throwing them up on E-Bay. These vintage tools fetch a neat little price - enough at least to buy you a few quarts. And thankfully, you won't need any sharp tools to open them.
