Disturbing Secret Of Baseball Great Pete Rose Revealed

Legendary Major League Baseball player Pete Rose is no stranger to scandals, but there’s a new one that has emerged that’s more shocking than any of the others that have been attached to his name. A newly unveiled court document alleges that baseball’s all-time hit king had a sexual relationship with a female under the age of 16 during the 1970s. As the New York Post shares, the allegation first came to light during a 2015 radio interview, and it’s now in the spotlight for all to see as part of a defamation suit.

John Dowd worked as special counsel for MLB back when Rose was under investigation for allegedly betting on games. That investigation led to Rose being banished from the game. Dowd was recounting the case last year during an interview, and he dropped an explosive allegation.

"Michael Bertolini told us, you know, he not only ran bets, but ran young girls down at spring training, ages 12 to 14. Isn't that lovely? So that's statutory rape every time you do that," he said.

Rose has sued Dowd for defamation, and court documents related to the case have been unveiled. Those documents list the allegations in detail, and Rose’s already tattered legacy has been hit with another black mark. Ray Genco, one of Rose's attorneys, responded to a request for comment from ESPN via email.

"John Dowd purposely made a defamatory statement that damaged Pete -- serial pedophilia consisting of the statutory rape of 12- to 14-year-olds during spring training. It is also false. And Judge Tucker just ruled that it constitutes defamation per se,” he wrote. "Dowd can't defend his own actions here -- so he is distracting. It's just Dowd attacking Pete instead of defending his own inexplicable accusations on the radio the day before Pete was to be honored in Cincinnati at the All-Star Game. His litigation strategy is to further drag Pete's name through the mud. It's a witch hunt -- and won't be a successful litigation strategy."

Rose, 76, is not in danger of facing criminal charges due to the statute of limitations, but his tarnished reputation is worse for the wear now that these allegations have been uncovered.

“Rose acknowledged he had a sexual relationship with the woman in court documents made public Monday, but he said his information and belief was that it started when she was 16,” ESPN reports. “He was 34, married and the father of two children in 1975, when he says he began having sex with the woman, referred to in the filing as 'Jane Doe.' Rose said he does not recall how long the relationship lasted.”

David Tobin, an attorney for Dowd, had a simple reply to the denials from Rose’s legal team.

"We'll let the filing speak for itself," he said.

Dowd, 76, is a former federal prosecutor and a longtime Washington attorney. He’s currently heading up the legal defense team for President Donald Trump in relation to the ongoing Russia probe. We’ll have to wait and see how this one plays out, but it’s hard to fathom Dowd bringing the allegations up if there was no merit to them.
